Yes, it was snowing in Detroit yesterday…and it was barely 40 degrees. And yes, I still love my hometown! But correct me if I’m wrong, this type of weather really pushes me to think about the warmth of summer!

If you are the parent of a child with Epilepsy, there’s great opportunity for you to experience summer programs all around the country. How about camp? Yes…you can send your child to camp! There are some fantastic camps, and it might mean stepping outside the box for you and your family. In other words, give your child a week that he or she might otherwise never have experienced.

I loved camp! Granted my Epilepsy was only diagnosed 7 ½ years ago and I never experienced camp for children with Epilepsy, but it’s wonderful to see these programs which are so specific and special.

Camp Discovery (my local camp here in Michigan) has a fantastic 5-day long program. I love the description on their website:

“Campers enjoy all the activities that camp has to offer, including a climbing wall, canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, archery, art and much more. Campers also participate in a small group “ask the expert” informational session on epilepsy. At Camp Discovery, campers are welcomed into an environment that is encouraging, blameless, kind, committed and safe.”

Blameless; committed; safe. What more could you ask for? And, nearly every camp has not only camp activities, but also informational sessions for kids. They can ask doctors and other people intimately involved with Epilepsy anything they want.

So, give your child a treat this summer…send him or her to camp!
