I visited with my friends from the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan yesterday afternoon at their office. We discussed many issues, including their upcoming Summer Stroll for Epilepsy, held at 4 locations around Michigan. I will be participating in the one held at the Detroit Zoo…along with my family. For those of you around the world, if you’ve never participated in a gathering or fundraiser for your local Epilepsy Foundation, I highly suggest it! It’s very easy to do, and not only will your Epilepsy Foundation benefit, but you stand to gain so much! I have made some wonderful friends and really connected with some fantastic people at the last few Summer Strolls.

As we chatted about the Stroll and some of the great things that are in store for participants, I began to think…how would I know so much about ‘living with Epilepsy’ had it not been for my involvement with the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan? As much as I adore my doctor, he can only tell me so much about how Epilepsy can or can’t affect my life. It’s the Foundation that has really opened my eyes to creating awareness and erasing the stigma of Epilepsy. Granted much of this is due to my attitude and my acceptance of my ‘new’ life, but still…the organization has provided me with SO much background and information.
We must do what we can to support our local Foundations…in the U.S., there are more than 50 local Foundation affiliates. Money in most states is so tight, so they rely on donations and grants to operate. I have never been ‘alone’ in my journey with Epilepsy. No one has to be. You have the resources, the programs, the support and the people who can guide you, at your fingertips.

For those who don’t have local affiliates, check to see what organizations exist in your area. It’s simple…you can Google ‘Epilepsy Advocacy’ or ‘Epilepsy Awareness’ and include your state or your city. There are other organizations set up to provide support and resources. Along with your family and close friends, there are so many others who can make this journey with you!
