I came across this as I was on Twitter this afternoon. Epilepsy as live art isn’t controversial
In Great Britain, an actress with epilepsy plans to go off of her meds and stay awake for 24 hours in order to induce a seizure in front of the audience so they can see what a ‘fit’ as it’s called in the UK, looks like. They are even going so far as to sounding an alarm so the audience can film the episode on their mobile phones.
Granted, they are expecting this to later appear on sites like youtube.com. So, here are the questions…is this really art? Should she be doing this for show? You’ve heard of “Talk About It”, the Epilepsy Foundation’s grand campaign to make sure we are spreading the word that epilepsy is not something to back away from and hide in the shadows, but is this over the top?
As someone with epilepsy, I had to read this article several times to form my opinion. And after a while, I decided, I was completely in favor of Rita Marcalo’s quest. If she’s going to put herself out there for all to see, AND LEARN then, I’m all for it. The audience certainly won’t walk away having not realized that seizures are extremely provocative events and they can be startling. By all means, she won’t leave anyone snoozing in the audience after that performance.
