It’s something that’s becoming more and more prevalent, people who suffer from epilepsy, they either don’t have health insurance or have recently lost their coverage. So, they figure they will take matters into their own hands and they reduce the amount of meds they take or they simply take themselves off of the anti-seizure medication because they can’t afford it.
They stop visiting with their neurologist/epileptologist. The consequences can be so dangerous and even deadly. So what are the alternatives?
One neurologist at DMC/Wayne State University told me that patients need to reach out to their doctor before they make any rash decisions. The stress alone can lead to increased seizures, let alone taking yourself off of the necessary medications. There are some options for the uninsured, but you don’t know unless you ask.
-Drug Trials
-Patient Treatment Trials
You can rest assured doctors want to find solutions to your health insurance problems. They also don’t want your seizures to increase. So if you are having problems with coverage, make some calls until you find a group that will speak to you.
