The Portuguese actress in the UK who was attempting an epileptic seizure as art, failed in her attempt, (see 11/23/09 post). Now the failure is attracting about as much attention as the attempt itself. Controversial Epileptic Fit Performance Ends in Failure

Rita Marcalo stopped taking her medications, began to drink wine and coffee, and ate chocolate (all stimulants for her…and she placed herself in front of strobe lights in order to induce seizures. This was in an attempt to bring on seizures in front of an audience. She also deprived herself of sleep and food.
Interestingly, the project received grants from the UK Arts Council.
The question is..who would want to see a live seizure as it happens? And, is it really art, or is Epilepsy an illness? Judging by the comments posted under this article (you can read for yourself by clicking on the link), not too many people agree with the concept, but the theater was packed! Is Rita Marcalo an actress/dancer or is she someone to be commended for her bravery and perseverance? The British government, or someone of some influence supported her efforts enough to grant her funds for the project. It will be interesting to follow the story.
